
Death and BurialĪccording to the poem/saga of Beowulf, his dead body is transported to Hronesness where a grave mound is built. If he existed, he would have lived in the 500's and been born in what in modern-day is Sweden, however, Swedish historians/archeologists is not agreeing on which part. He was supposedly the son of the warrior Eggter (Eggþér), in old English Ecgþeow. AD 1000.īeowulf is said to have been a young warrior, slayer of mythological creatures who became king of Danes.īeovulf, Beowulf, Beaduwulf, Bjovulf, Bjolf, Bodulf, Biowulfaz, Baduwulfaz. Then transmitted orally in various dialects and receiving a “Christian colouring” in the process, it was finally preserved in a manuscript in southern England abt. Some historians seem to think that the poem has its origin in eastern Scandinavia and may have been transferred to East Anglia around AD 600, possibly in connection with a royal marriage. "The story is set in pagan Scandanavia in the 6th century." The epic poem/saga of Beowulf is part of the Nowell Codex, which in turn is part of the Cotton collection located within the British Library.
